8 + 2 Inexpensive Mac apps for Web Design.

pixelmator.com

I posted this sometime over winter break on my design blog. Not a lot of traffic over there, so I thought I would repost here. Any additions? @cbuck

  1. Komposer - Good WYSIWYG editor based on NVU… Great to flesh out ideas quickly. Oh yeah it is Open Source. Awesome. $0
  2. Coda - This is really the one piece of software I wouldn’t do without. It is by far the more comprehensive and easy to use code editor out there. Plus, you get all the power of Transmission too! Score. Did I mention is was nothing short of beautiful. No one comes close, $99
  3. Smultron - If a 100 bones is a little steep for your economic climate, try this open source editor. This was my solution before I discovered the beauty of Coda. Pair this app with CyberDuck for your FTP needs. $0
  4. CSSEdit - While Coda sports an almost perfect CSS editor, it is still a pale comparison to CSS Edit. Get code or menu based production in one cool little tool. Aces. $40
  5. Skitch - Screenshots galore, quick image sharing, plus LOL Cats ready. Uncanny. $0
  6. Gimp - With a comparable set of tools to that of Photoshop, The Gimp is a shining light in the Open Source Community, something that really shows what a group of dedicated coders and designers can put forth for the better of their field. The only caveat is that you will need to install X11 to run this package, as no native version exists yet. $0
  7. Pixelmator - Not as many features as The Gimp, or Photoshop for that matter. But no X11 and no $700 price tag. You get the good stuff too: layers, masking, blending… Also a pretty nice interface makes it easy to drive comfortably in just a few minutes. $60
  8. Picturesque - Mostly a 5 trick pony, but those tricks! Great to add a little depth to a screenshot or just to batch round corners for a nice effect for your portfolio (guilty.) Also give you the ability to save preset effects bundles to quick multi-image processing. Total. Time. Saver. $35
